Jim Esten – Wellness Programming Lead and Co-Owner
Jim’s journey through the wellness world started as a record-setting high school and college middle distance runner in the 70s and early 80s. After graduating high school, Jim returned to coach runners and set down a path that would have him coaching young athletes in some capacity for three decades. In recent years, Jim’s focus turned from sport-specific to athletic performance coaching for teen athletes with special emphasis on injury prevention and work with adults over 40. Jim is a strong proponent of functional movement and a holistic, healthy lifestyle to turn the aging process from something to be feared into a joy to be vibrantly experienced – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Now approaching his mid-50s and in perhaps the best shape of his life, Jim is a certified group fitness and boot camp instructor, has done extensive coursework toward certification in functional aging, and holds graduate degrees in ministry and religious studies from Cardinal Stritch University. He resides in Cedarburg, WI with wife Caryn and 6 of their 8 amazing children (the oldest, a few years away from home now, graduated from UW-Madison in May 2015 and is serving in Namibia, Africa on a 2 year assignment with the Peace Corps and the next in line began college in the fall of 2016, attending the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University).

Our Rock Star Staff Trainers
Loran Hazlett — Thursdays 5:30 and 7:30 pm
Hi my name is Loran! My fitness/wellness journey began right when I first started walking. From the very beginning, I was an active kid, running around the playground at school, chasing after boys, playing four square, throwing Frisbees around, etc. Once I was old enough, my parents enrolled me in almost every organized sport a kid could play, in attempts at channeling my energy in a productive way. I became very fond of softball and volleyball as I grew older and eventually stuck with those two sports into high school. After graduating from Cedarburg High School in 2011, I started a new adventure at the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse. At UW-L, I reverted back to my younger self and participated in all sorts of intramural sports, ranging from basketball to ultimate Frisbee. In addition, I began focusing my studies on the key components of exercise and sports and eventually graduated in May 2015 with a BS in exercise sports science. During my final year of school, I was fortunate enough to be an intern at a gym very similar to 2 The Max Training. That gym held the same ideals revolving around functional movement training, workouts that changed every day that brought up heart rates in a short amount of time. I am excited to continue teaching and helping people reach their goals of health and fitness,
Kelley Julian — Yoga, Wednesday & Friday mornings @ 9:15 am
My journey towards becoming a yoga instructor began when I was introduced to dance as a child, and as I carried on dancing through my early twenties. It was my first taste of movement with breath—which is what Yoga essentially is—of mindful movement, and of the many benefits movement in any fashion had on your emotional and physical life and your health. As I started to explore other areas of exercise, transitioning through my twenties and thirties to activities like running, weight lifting, cross-training and cross-fit, I found I had a passion for teaching and helping others reach their fitness goals. Without even meaning to I ended up informally teaching a Friday morning boot camp at my gym with my friends—and it was a blast!
This passion for teaching, and a desire to tap back into the strength and flexibility I experienced when dancing led me to undergo a teacher training and receive my certification in Barre in 2014. Shortly after that I delved deeper into my own yoga practice and found myself once again in teacher training—this time to receive my 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher certificate.
I am so excited to be sharing the benefits of Yoga with members at 2 The Max Training, and look forward to being a part of their journey into more mindful movement.
Laura Peterson – Yoga – Tuesdays, 6:30 am
About 13 years ago I moved to New York City. I started graduate school and working part time. I found that I needed an activity that would help me manage my stress, my mind, and my body. This is when I discovered yoga. Yoga was an opportunity to connect to myself and my breath. I practiced yoga while also teaching third grade in the public school system.
In 2011, while I was pregnant with my first child, I attended Laughing Lotus, a studio run by Dana Flynn. I graduated from Laughing Lotus with my 200-hour vinyasa instructor license. I gave birth to my daughter and started working at a local yoga studio in Brooklyn called Jaya Yoga Center. I worked as an administrator and also teaching early morning classes. Two years later, after the birth of my second child, I received my yoga license to teach prenatal yoga, as well as my license to teach children.
I have since moved back to Wisconsin with my family. I currently work full time as an elementary school teacher. I am so excited and feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to continue teaching yoga to people in my community. I really believe it helps everyone’s mind, body, and soul.
Elissa Hornick – Tuesdays. 5:30/7:30 pm and Wednesdays, 7:30 pm
I have loved being active for as long as I can remember! As a child, I participated in a variety of sports all year round, including volleyball, basketball, and soccer. I continued to run track and play volleyball in high school. I attended Bulter University in Indianapolis and recently graduated with my degree in physician assistant studies. I am so happy to be back in Cedarburg and look forward to helping others stay active and healthy!
Selena Esten – Intern – Wednesdays, 5:30 pm & Thursdays, 6 am
Selena (Jim’s oldest daughter) is a sophomore at Cedarburg High School. As a starting forward as a freshman on the CHS girls soccer team, she was one of the leading scorers in the North Shore Conference. On the club side, she splits time between field and goalkeeper play on North United teams where she played on 3 consecutive state championship teams. Her save in a PK shootout secured the 3rd title in 2015. Selena is a frequent participant in the early morning boot camps and does some spot coverage of classes for dad! Her college aspirations include sports and study in a health sciences field.
Betsy Whitcomb – Overland Design – Events and Birthday Parties!
Hi my name is Betsy! My love for events and all things party began when I was a child. My fun-loving parents taught me everything I know about planning a fantastic party by throwing over the top events at venues near and far. I officially began my event planning career when putting my own wedding together in 2007. I morphed my love of details into a custom invitation company called Paper Perfection. After three years I added on full scale event planning and changed the name to Overland Design. I had been on the lookout for a regular event space to offer my clients and thus the partnership with 2 The Max Training was formed!
I am so excited to be planning parties & events with members at 2 The Max Training, and look forward to being a part of your active event!
